Daniel Doss Band – Greater Than Us All

May 7, 2008

I have decided each month to take some time to review a CD for you.  You have many, many websites to choose from that will give you insight into songs, bands, CDs, and any other news about Christian music.  My hope is to present my own, novice thoughts to new CDs I have come across while searching for music to lead in our EXP worship service.

Every once in a while, I come across a CD to which I cannot stop listening.  Daniel Doss Band’s Greater Than Us All is one of the best freshman CDs I have encountered in many years.  The band is lead by Daniel Doss.  Daniel currently serves on staff at Grace Community Church in Clarksville, TN.  Daniel helped plant the church that has grown from two hundred to over one thousand regular attendees in less than two years.  He is supported by an extremely blessed team with Joe Stevens (drums), Bryan Wolski (bass), and Derek Williams (guitar).  You can read more about the band here.

The CD opens with Great God, a driving apology to our Father for limiting his capabilities by our own human minds.  Great God proclaims, “God open our eyes to see.  Great God, greater than us all. let your people stand in awe!”

Great God is followed up quicky by the driving 6/8 rhythm of God In Me.  “You are the song of my heart.  You are the dance in my feet.  You are God in me!  You are the bread of my life.  You are the life giving drink.  You are the everything.  You are God in me!”  This is quickly becoming a favorite of our EXP family.

Hold On is a reminder to hold on to Jesus; He is always near.  This is quickly followed by the sweet song, Abba Father, which reminds us of our Father’s love.  “You have loved with arms wide open.  You have held me through it all.  You are faithful to the broken.  Lord, You hear me when I call.  What a great Father you are!”

The CD takes a turn with the very catchy melody of Blessed is the One.  Truly blessed is the one who trust you, Father.  So when things are down, when things are not going the way I want, when I think I am at the end of the rope, in the good times and bad, I will trust you!  “I will trust you in the pain, when I can’t see past today, when it’s hard to lift my hands to praise you – I will trust you.”

Lord Reign asks for God’s forgiveness when we can’t forgive ourselves and asks God to reign over everything.  Light is Shining features a unique guitar riff to open the song.  The song grows into a beautiful chorus “Alleluia, alleluia to the Lamb!” which features tight harmonies from the band.

Love Like Rain is a very well written 6/8 piece featuring string sounds backing a beautiful melody line throughout the verses and chorus.  “Love like rain fall down, love like arms surround.  Hold the univers in place.  Hold my heart in your embrace.”

Sing Your Name is a pure praise anthem to our Savior Jesus God.  The song talks about trying to find the right and proper words to sing to Christ.  Instead the author resolves to sing the most beautiful words he can imagine, “Jesus, Jesus, Holy Lamb of God – Jesus, Jesus, Savior of the World.”

This incredible CD wraps up with two great songs.  Great Dreamer is an upbeat praise song telling of the greatness of our Christ.  I Need You is a beautiful piano-led piece with strong strings and acoustic guitar backing up the lead and harmony vocals.  “I need you every moment.  I need you every day.  I need you in the good time, and when it’s all been washed away, I need you.”

The CD is available everywhere.  Believe me though, it’s worth the extra $5+ to run down to your local christian book store and buy the CD.  This is one that you don’t want to rely solely on iTunes or another download service to have in your collection.
